At Mustang Creek Estates, we believe some of the best experiences begin with a simple question: “Why not?”
For our August Senior Skip Day, that question led us straight to the swimming pool. The idea started with our Flower Mound residents, who requested swimming during their Resident Council meeting. It was something a little outside the ordinary — and maybe even a little outside our comfort zone — but our team was determined to find a way to make it happen. And we are so glad we did.
More Than a Day at the Pool
Residents from Mustang Creek Estates neighborhoods came together for a water aerobics class, but the morning quickly became about much more than exercise. Some residents faced childhood fears and got into the water despite being nervous. Others found themselves reliving memories of swimming and summers from years ago. Some tried something completely new.
There were laps completed, plenty of laughter and even a water-gun battle between residents and caregivers — although we should probably mention that only the residents were armed with water guns. Needless to say, they won! Throughout the morning, residents encouraged one another, caregivers provided support and everyone had a chance to simply enjoy being together.
A Reunion 20 Years in the Making
One of the most memorable moments of the day wasn't planned at all. Two residents — one from our Sachse neighborhood and one from Flower Mound — discovered they already knew each other. More than 20 years ago, before retiring, the two had worked together as musicians. Senior Skip Day unexpectedly brought them back together.
It was a beautiful reminder that every person who calls Mustang Creek Estates home brings a lifetime of experiences, relationships and stories with them. Sometimes all it takes is the right moment for those stories to come rushing back.
Resident Voices Matter
Perhaps the best part of August's Senior Skip Day is how it began: with our residents. Resident Council gives the people who live at Mustang Creek Estates an opportunity to share what they enjoy, what matters to them and what they'd like to do next. When our Flower Mound residents said they wanted to go swimming, our team listened. That's important to us!
Moving to Assisted Living or Memory Care shouldn't mean giving up new experiences, adventures or the opportunity to have a say in how you spend your days. Whether it's getting back into a swimming pool, attending a concert, visiting a favorite destination or trying something for the very first time, we want our residents to continue experiencing life.
This Is Senior Skip Day
Senior Skip Day was created to break the routine and give our residents experiences they can look forward to, talk about and remember.
Sometimes those experiences are big. Sometimes they're silly. And sometimes, like this month, they bring together exercise, courage, old memories, new experiences, friendship and a really unfair water-gun fight.
Most importantly, they're another example of what we mean when we say Assisted Living and Memory Care done differently.
At Mustang Creek Estates, growing older doesn't mean you stop making memories.
Sometimes, you just have to keep believing — and jump in.
