The Healing Power of Pets

Why Four-Legged Friends Make Life Better as We Age

Mustang Creek Estates resident enjoys time with a visiting dog during a neighborhood pet visit.

If you've ever been greeted by a wagging tail after a long day, you already know that pets have a special way of making life brighter.

In honor of National Dog Day on August 26, we're celebrating the incredible bond between people and their pets — and the many ways animals can enrich the lives of older adults.

At Mustang Creek Estates, we see it firsthand. Whether it's a resident cuddling with their own beloved dog, a therapy dog making its weekly rounds, or a visit from local shelter dogs looking for a little extra love, there's something magical about the smiles that appear when animals are around.

More Than Companionship

For many older adults, pets are more than animals — they're family.

They provide unconditional love, companionship, routine, and comfort during life's many transitions.

Research has shown that spending time with animals may help:

  • Reduce feelings of loneliness

  • Lower stress and anxiety

  • Encourage conversation and social interaction

  • Promote physical activity through walking or play

  • Bring comfort during difficult days

  • Increase overall happiness

Sometimes, a gentle nudge from a wet nose or a warm dog curled up beside you is exactly what's needed.

Every Visit Brings Smiles

One of our favorite days at Mustang Creek Estates is when therapy dogs come to visit.

Residents often light up as they pet the dogs, laugh at their playful personalities, and share stories about pets they've loved over the years.

Even residents who are typically quiet may begin talking about the Labrador they raised, the little terrier that followed them everywhere, or the family dog their children grew up with.

Those memories spark conversations, encourage social connection, and create joyful moments that everyone enjoys.

Occasionally, we're also fortunate to welcome dogs from local animal shelters.

These visits not only brighten our residents' day — they provide extra love and attention to animals waiting for their forever homes.

It's a win for everyone involved.

Pets Bring Back Memories

Animals have an incredible way of unlocking memories.

A simple interaction with a dog can remind someone of childhood adventures, family vacations, afternoons in the backyard, or years spent caring for a beloved companion.

Those memories often become conversations, laughter, and meaningful connections with others.

A Pet-Friendly Community

At Mustang Creek Estates, we understand that pets are often part of the family. That's why we're proud to be a pet-friendly community, welcoming resident pets while also embracing opportunities for therapy animal visits and special events featuring our furry friends.

Our smaller, residential-style homes create a warm and welcoming environment where both residents and their pets can feel at home.

Every Tail Wag Makes a Difference

The benefits of pets go far beyond companionship.

They remind us to slow down.

To laugh.

To connect.

To care.

To enjoy the little moments.

This National Dog Day, we're celebrating all the four-legged friends who bring comfort, joy, and unconditional love into our lives.

After all, some of life's very best therapists have four paws and a wagging tail.
