Staying Hydrated as We Age

Simple ways to prevent dehydration and support a healthier, safer summer.

During the hot summer months, most of us know we should drink more water. But for older adults, staying hydrated isn't just about comfort — it's an important part of maintaining overall health and well-being.

Unfortunately, dehydration is one of the most common reasons older adults end up in the emergency room during the summer. The good news is that it's often preventable with a few simple habits.

Why Are Seniors More at Risk?

As we age, our bodies naturally hold less water and our sense of thirst becomes less reliable. Many older adults simply don't feel thirsty until they're already becoming dehydrated. Certain medications, hot weather, chronic medical conditions, and mobility challenges can increase the risk even more.

Signs of Dehydration

Watch for:

  • Increased confusion or forgetfulness

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Dizziness

  • Dry mouth or cracked lips

  • Headaches

  • Dark yellow urine

  • Less frequent urination

  • Loss of appetite

  • Muscle cramps

Sometimes dehydration first appears as increased confusion, which can easily be mistaken for normal aging or dementia.

Simple Ways to Stay Hydrated

Water is always the best choice, but hydration doesn't have to come from a glass of water alone.

Foods with high water content include:

  • Watermelon

  • Strawberries

  • Oranges

  • Grapes

  • Cucumbers

  • Tomatoes

  • Lettuce

  • Peaches

  • Celery

  • Bell peppers

Other great hydration choices include:

  • Milk

  • Herbal tea

  • Flavored water

  • Low-sodium soups

  • Smoothies

  • Electrolyte beverages (when recommended by a healthcare provider)

Make Hydration a Daily Habit

Try these easy tips:

  • Keep a favorite water bottle nearby.

  • Drink a small glass of water with every meal and snack.

  • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the day.

  • Sip fluids before feeling thirsty.

  • Set reminders if needed.

  • Spend time indoors during the hottest part of the day.

How Assisted Living Can Help

At Mustang Creek Estates, hydration is part of everyday wellness. Our care team regularly encourages residents to drink fluids throughout the day, offers fresh fruit and beverages during meals and activities, and monitors residents who may be at greater risk for dehydration. Combined with home-cooked meals, personalized care, and engaging activities, it's one more way we help residents stay healthy, active, and feeling their best.

Small Habits Make a Big Difference

A few extra glasses of water and a slice of watermelon may seem simple — but they can go a long way toward helping older adults enjoy a healthier, safer summer. If you're caring for an aging loved one and have questions about daily wellness or assisted living, we'd love to help.
